EXPLANATION OF THE METHOD USED
TO EVALUATE PAPERS
FOR THE MODULE B "ESONERO"
(Phonetic and Conversation-Analysis transcriptions)

Phonetic Transcription

3 points =  If I read your phonetic transcription out loud to a group of native speakers of English, most of them would understand the words I am pronouncing and would think I have an RP ("Received Pronunciation") accent.

2 points =  If I read your phonetic transcription out loud to a group of native speakers of English, most of them would understand the words I am pronouncing and would think I have the accent of some English-speaking community (although not the RP accent of the BBC speaker you were supposed to transcribe).

1 point = If I read your phonetic transcription out loud to a group of native speakers of English, most of them would understand the words I am pronouncing but would think I have a "strange" (non standard) accent.

0 points =  If I read your phonetic transcription out loud to a group of native speakers of English, most of them would not understand the words I am pronouncing and would consider my accent incomprehensible.

CA Transcription

2 points = If two actors read your CA transcription out loud to a group of native speakers of English, most of the latter would understand which words Tom and Mrs. W. emphasized (through intonation or loudness) in the recording you had to transcribe.  The native speakers would also understand which words and ideas Tom and Mrs. W. were hesitant about, which words and ideas triggered backchanneling  or an interruption by the other interlocutor and when turns were taken.

1 point = If two actors read your CA transcription out loud to a group of native speakers of English, most of them would understand which words Tom and Mrs. W. emphasized (through intonation or loudness) and when turns were taken.

Phonetic Transcription (control questions)

If you did poorly on the Phonetic  Transcription (above) but at least a part of your transcription of the control speech segment was acceptable (intelligible), your score was raised by 1 point.

Initial Questions

If your answers to the three initial "content questions" were excellent, your total score was raised by 1 point, provided you did not get zero on either the phonetic or the CA transcription.

TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS = 7

YOUR SCORE =  TOTAL POINTS EARNED divided by 2

N.B.  If you earned 3.5 points, you received a "3" and were listed as "distinto/a" (particularly good).
