Students
PRINT a copy of their paper and bring it to class on TUESDAY, October
17th, for evaluation by the Group Leader (or a substitute
elected by the group). The Leader discusses her/his criteria for each
paper with the entire group, using the
following guidelines, then gives a mark from 0 (zero) to 5
(five)..
FORM:
The student's paper is attractive and easy to read (typed, wide
margins, aligned, complete information at the top giving name, group,
academic year, course, task number) = 1
The
student's paper is not attractive (handwritten instead of typed,
narrow margins, hard to identify the author
or the year/course/task). = 0
CONTENT There are four categories;
students get 0 or 1 point in each category.
(a.) There are
at least five values = 1. There are fewer than five
values = 0.
(b.) The values are expressed as maxims. =
1. The values are abstract and/or vague. = 0
Maxims
are exhortations to “Do this, or do that” that guide
one's behavior. The maxim of many Milanesi,
for example, seems to be: “Bisogna
correre, il tempo è danaro”. A stereotypical
Palermitano might say, as his maxim:
“L'onore sopra tutto!”
or perhaps “Mai fare il delatore!”
(c.)
The maxims express a cultural value.= 1.
The maxims give psychological values. = 0.
Cultural = a value
shared by an entire community. Psychological = a value not typical of
the community.
(d.) The value characterizes
Brits, in particular R.P. speakers = 1. The
value is generic. = 0.
To claim that the value is typical of a
social class, the student should have documented the way-of-life
associated with its members. See the Task instructions for the places
and institutions that contribute to forming R.P.
speakers in Britain.
Group Leaders can add a comment after a student's mark if they want, but it is not necessary.
