'Accommodating to the Englishes of the World'

Acquire a relativistic, constructivistic view of language in general and of English in particular; begin to see the relationship between 'language' and 'thought' (or 'existential stances') by introjecting an English-speaking double; grasp the key role of one's interlocutor in co-constructing 'shared meaning' through exchanges in English with native and non-native speakers. 

Acquisire una visione relativistica e costruttivistica del linguaggio in generale e della lingua inglese in particolare; chiarire il rapporto tra 'linguaggio' e 'pensiero' (o 'stato esistenziale') attraverso l'assimilazione dei discorsi di un sosia; cogliere il ruolo determinante dell'interlocutore nella co-costruzione del 'significato condiviso', attraverso scambi in Inglese con parlanti nativi e non-nativi.

What do we mean by 'English' and 'learning English' in our globalized yet fragmented world? Partial answers will be sought through Ethnographic field work in multi-ethnic Rome. Then, using films, students will identify with members of particular English-speaking cultures and thereby grasp how certain modes of being translate into ways of speaking. They will then inventory each language used to test the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. Finally they will study specific CAP's (Cultural Accommodation Practices) in native/non-native interactions English -- those they experienced in real life and those seen on film. 

Per capire cosa vuol dire "la lingua inglese" e "imparare l'inglese" nel odierno mondo globalizzato (ma anche frantumato), gli studenti intraprenderanno indagini etnografiche nei quartieri multiculturali di Roma. Inoltre, attraverso filmati impareranno ad assimilare ('introiezione culturale') i modi di essere e di esprimersi che caratterizzano particolari parlanti nativi d'inglese. Inventarieranno poi i linguaggi assimilati per verificare le ipotesi Sapir-Whorf. Infine studieranno alcune PAC (pratiche di accomodamento culturale) usate nelle interazioni vissute e filmate.
