CRITERIA FOR YOUR MARKS

1.Intelligibility
and fluidity
pronunciation, prosody
lexical items, grammar
gestures fit with words

Can I understand the student? Or do basic pronunciation and grammar distortions make it difficult to follow her? Does her prosody sound natural (like she is saying something she MEANS to say)? Are the lexical items clear and appropriate? Do her gestures fit with her words, or do her words and gestures say different things?

2.Control of
the interaction
understanding
clarification
topic focus

Is the student in control of the situation? Does she seem to be understanding me? If she doesn't understand, does she use the clarification routines promptly and effectively? Does she control the focus of our interaction, so that SHE is co-determining the topic we are speaking about (she is not just passive).

3. Dexterity
and wit
negotiate senses
right register, tone
brilliant viewpoint

Is the student not just understandable, but witty and brilliant in her delivery? Is she able to negotiate the sense of what she is trying to say, if she feels I might not grasp it. Is her register and her tone of voice right for the setting? Can she use the right kind of humor? Does she offer a novel or particularly illuminating viewpoint?

4.Information
content
clear, factual
highly detailed
convincing ring

Does the student clearly restate the views expressed in class and in the text “Seeing and saying things in English”, before giving her own views? Are her affirmations plausibly factual? Are they highly detailed (not vague or generic)? Does what she say have a convincing ring to it?

5. Intercultural
effectiveness
shared values
right volitive stance
deep grasp

Is she an interculturally effective speaker? Does she comunicate – with her words, gestures, choice of topics and presentation – the she and I share the same values and give the same meaning to our words? Does she adopt a “volitive stance” that I can identify with? Does her way of speaking enable me to grasp her deeply?
